Meaning & Analysis
Yosemite I, October 5th 2011 by David Hockney is an iPad drawing printed on four sheets of paper, created during the artist's visit to Yosemite National Park in 2011. This landscape artwork showcases two trees extending up the composition, with a waterfall tracing down the work, surrounded by low-hanging clouds. It forms part of Hockney's Yosemite Suite, a series that continues his long-standing exploration of landscape and technology in art.
In this observation, Hockney employs his iPad to render the iconic scenery of Yosemite National Park. The artwork depicts lush greenery and towering trees against a backdrop of distant mountains, with Hockney's characteristic use of vivid hues bringing the scene to life.
By choosing to print the digital drawing on four separate sheets of paper, Hockney creates a sense of scale that echoes the grandeur of the Yosemite landscape itself. This multi-panel approach also recalls his earlier photocollages, demonstrating a continuity in his artistic practice even as he explores new media.
