David Wojnarowicz, born on September 14, 1954, in Red Bank, New Jersey, was an American artist known for his raw and provocative engagement with social and political issues. His multidisciplinary work spanned painting, photography, film, and writing, often merging text with image to confront themes of marginalisation, sexuality, and the AIDS crisis. Largely self-taught and driven by his tumultuous early years, Wojnarowicz became a leading voice in the fight against societal indifference and government negligence during the AIDS epidemic. His legacy endures through his powerful art and activism, continuing to shine a light on the social injustices which underpin the AIDS crisis, many of which can be felt today.
