Dissected Companion (black) is a signed screen print in colours, on heavy wove paper which was made by renowned American artist and designer, KAWS in 2006. The print depicts KAWS’ most iconic cartoon character, Companion, in a unique way. Set against a black backdrop, half of Companion’s body is cut open so the viewer can see into his body, which is rendered in bright and vibrant colours. Companion’s lungs, liver and intestines are rendered in uncharacteristic colours which reflects KAWS’ love of colour which he often explores using his distinctive graphic style.
Dissected Companion (black) is part of the Companion collection, a body of prints that all depict the much-loved cartoon character that KAWS created himself in 1999. Companion is characterised by his distinct shape, which is reminiscent of Mickey Mouse, his skull and crossbone head, and his crossed out eyes. This print, however, gives a different perspective of Companion which demonstrates KAWS’ creative flair.
Companion is one of a set of stock characters created by KAWS that appear repeatedly throughout his artworks. Other notable characters include Accomplice, Chum and Bendy. KAWS’ characters were initially drawn in 2D, born out of his experimentation with graffiti in New York. With KAWS’ rise in popularity, many of the characters have also been realised in 3D and made into sculptures or toys.
