No Reply 4 is a signed screen print in colours on wove paper made by renowned American artist and designer, KAWS in 2015. The print depicts an abstract arrangement of shapes, rendered in vibrant colours, which seem to be inspired by cartoon imagery. Yellow, purple, green and red dominate the pink, imbuing it with a sense of playfulness that chimes with the cartoon inspired images. The print captures KAWS’ love of colour, as well as his unique style which is characterised by bold gestural lines and a set of distinct graphics.
The print is part of the No Reply collection, a series of 10 screen prints, all of which depict portions of a cartoon character’s face or compositions of cartoon inspired features. The collection is similar to Blame Game, produced in 2014, which also features cropped sections of a cartoon character’s face.
KAWS’ work is clearly inspired by animation and a love of cartoons. The artist has created a stock of figurative characters which frequently re-appear throughout his artworks. Companion, Bendy, Accomplice and Chum were all developed by KAWS through his experimentation with graffiti and street art. In addition to creating his own characters, KAWS has drawn on famous cartoon characters as inspiration for his artworks, with an example being SpongeBob Square Pants who inspired to the Kawsbob collection.
