Meaning & Analysis
No Reply 9 is a signed screen print in colours on wove paper made by renowned American artist and designer, KAWS in 2015. The print depicts a set of shapes rendered in bold and vibrant colours. When looked at in isolation, it is hard to discern what the viewer is looking at. However, viewed alongside the other prints in the No Reply collection, it becomes apparent that the print is inspired by a cartoon character’s facial features.
The No Reply collection is composed of 10 screen prints, all of which show parts of a cartoon character’s face, or other cartoon inspired shapes. The collection captures KAWS’ distinct artistic style, characterised by an emphasis on colour, bold gestural lines and a set of distinct graphics. This print features KAWS’ signature crosses, a visual motif that is repeated throughout the artist’s artworks.
KAWS has had a longstanding fascination with cartoons and they have inspired many of his artworks. As well as creating his own cartoon characters and unique compositions, like the No Reply collection, KAWS has also taken familiar cartoon characters and adapted them using his unique visual language.
