The Valley (complete set) is a portfolio of etchings by Keith Haring, produced in 1989 in a signed edition of 80 with text by William S. Burroughs. Haring's finely drawn images of bodies, mountains, helicopters, crowds and faces are paired with photo-etched pages of Burroughs's handwritten text. It forms the complete The Valley series.
The text is the chapter "The Valley" from Burroughs's 1987 novel The Western Lands, which describes a community living in a deep crevasse under quarantine, afflicted by an unnamed virus. Haring drew his images directly onto copper plates in his New York studio in April 1989, by which time he was seriously ill, and the parallels between the story and the AIDS crisis are clear throughout.
The etchings are unlike most of Haring's work. In place of the bold, simplified outline, he uses a fine, wiry line and dense hatching. His figures take on detailed features, wrinkles and body hair. A man with a microphone stands before a "CDC" screen. A scarred, dripping face stares out from one sheet. Helicopters circle a crowd in a mountain pass. A figure in a protective suit confronts a naked man. Other plates show bodies falling into a ravine, a figure smoking and an advertisement for "Glowing Corn". Published by George Mulder Fine Arts, the suite was the last collaboration between Haring and Burroughs and was released in February 1990, the month of Haring's death.
