Shapes And Sizes is a lithograph from 1967 by L. S. Lowry that shows a group of people standing on a pavement in a tightly cropped composition. Like many of Lowry’s depictions of people, these figures are highly stylised but differ from some of the artist’s other works in the way they are rendered in such dark, heavy lines.
The figures in Shapes And Sizes appear like silhouettes, some rendered almost entirely in black and the title of the print is indicative of the way in which the artist focuses solely on their differing sizes. As a means to capture the world around him, Lowry chose people from all walks of life to be his subjects in his drawings and paintings and Shapes And Sizes is no exception to this.
Lowry took great interest in the people whose lives he was trying to capture, and created over 8,000 drawings like this one, recording the everyday nuances of the world around him. Working as a rent collector during the day, and an artist at night, Lowry had a unique perspective into the lives of working class people in the North East of England. He was not working class himself but came across poverty everyday as he travelled around Greater Manchester collecting rent.
