This playful etching was executed by Tracey Emin in 2009 and forms part of our Animals collection of her work. The focal point of the work, which is printed slightly off-centre, is an animate monkey wearing an astronaut’s suit. Above this childlike illustration are the recognisable words “WE HAVE LIFT OFF”, written in Emin’s distinctive handwriting.
This endearing etching was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition of the same year. True to the eclectic and experimentational tone of the RA’s annual exhibition, Emin’s etching has a distinctively playful quality to be enjoyed by all viewers: young and old. Like Much of Emin’s work, there is a sense of childlike wonder in Space Monkey as the artist encourages her viewers to view the world through the joyful and naive eyes of a child.
