28 Sales, £1.3 Million: Inside David Hockney's Strongest Moving Focus Prints

David Hockney’s Moving Focus (1984–86) is one of the artist’s most significant print series of the 1980s. Produced with master printer Kenneth Tyler, the lithographs explore Hockney’s evolving approach to perspective through interiors, still lifes and architectural scenes, including the celebrated Hotel Acatlán compositions created during his time in Mexico.

During this period, Hockney’s interest in perspective was developing through several related projects, including theatre design and his Mexican interiors. These experiments came together in Moving Focus, where he challenged traditional single-point perspective by bringing multiple viewpoints into a single composition – an approach that would continue to influence his later exploration of space and image-making.

While Hockney’s digital output is currently a major focus for collectors, Moving Focus offers an opportunity to reassess an earlier chapter of this experimentation. Recent auction activity indicates growing attention across the series, particularly for compositions that combine Hockney’s distinctive use of colour with his innovative approach to perspective and spatial representation. This report examines nine key works within the series to understand where collector interest is concentrating and what recent results reveal about their current market position.

David Hockney Moving Focus Print Value

Where Is Collector Demand Concentrating Within David Hockney’s Moving Focus Prints?

Within Moving Focus, demand is concentrated around a small group of compositions that combine recognisable imagery, strong auction histories and limited availability. Amaryllis In Vase has generated the highest cumulative hammer value within this group since 2022, while the Hotel Acatlán works have emerged as some of the series’ strongest individual performers. Tyler Dining Room, meanwhile, provides the clearest indication of broader market activity due to its consistent appearance at auction.

David Hockney Amaryllis In Vase Print Market Performance

Amaryllis In Vase leads this group by total auction value, generating £630,088 across seven sales since 2022. All recorded results are from the Main Edition, demonstrating that value within Moving Focus is not driven solely by proof status or rarity.

Results have ranged from £61,000 to £141,000, highlighting the importance of market timing, placement and individual collector demand. The highest result was achieved in September 2022, while a subsequent sale one month later achieved £60,972. For sellers, this demonstrates that even within an established series, comparable works can perform differently depending on how and when they are brought to market.

David Hockney Hotel Acatlán Print Market Performance

The three Hotel Acatlán prints – Second Day, Two Weeks Later and First Day – form a distinct group within Moving Focus, all drawn from Hockney’s exploration of the Mexican hotel interior. Their auction histories reveal different stages of market development, with Second Day emerging as the strongest established performer, Two Weeks Later demonstrating consistent pricing strength, and First Day remaining comparatively scarce on the public market.

Hotel Acatlán: Second Day is the most frequently traded of the three, with six auction appearances since 2022, and has shown the clearest upward movement. After achieving around £90,000 in 2022, results softened into the £67,000–£71,000 range during 2023–24 before surging to a new auction high of £143,323 ($190,000) in May 2025. This result more than doubled the work’s recent trading range and established Second Day as one of the leading compositions within Moving Focus.

Hotel Acatlán: Two Weeks Later has appeared less frequently, with five recorded sales since 2022, but has maintained the highest average price of the three around £90,000. Results have remained consistently strong, rising from a 2022 average of approximately £84,000 to £97,000 in 2024, including a £107,875 ($140,000) result in 2024 – the second-highest individual result among the works analysed in this report. Its performance suggests sustained demand when examples become available.

Hotel Acatlán: First Day represents the most limited data point within the group. It has appeared only once at auction since 2022, achieving £90,734 ($110,000) in October 2023. While a single result cannot establish a long-term price trend, the sale is significant because it already places the work within the same value range as the more frequently traded Hotel Acatlán compositions. Its limited public availability reinforces the broader pattern seen across Moving Focus: scarcity remains an important factor in determining which works attract the strongest collector attention.

David Hockney Tyler Dining Room Print Value

Tyler Dining Room is the most actively traded work within this group, with nine auction appearances since 2022 – one of the higher transaction counts for the works within this series, and a clear indicator of broad collector demand.

The work’s price history shows a clear recovery cycle. After reaching a high of £90,000 in 2022, average hammer prices softened to around £53,000 in 2023 and £35,000 in 2024, reflecting a broader cooling period in the value of the work. However, demand strengthened through 2025, with the average recovering to £52,000, before the first 2026 result reached £80,899, achieved for an Artist’s Proof sold in South Africa.

Because Tyler Dining Room trades frequently enough to illustrate a meaningful price history, its recovery provides a more reliable indicator of market health than isolated results from rarely appearing works. Its movement back towards previous levels, alongside the wider growth of Moving Focus in 2025, suggests collector interest is broadening beyond only the series’ rarest compositions.

David Hockney Pembroke Studio Interior Print Value

Pembroke Studio Interior occupies a strong position within Hockney’s interior compositions, generating £241,360 across four auction results since 2022. Its price history shows an initial high of £77,770 ($90,000) in 2022, followed by results in the mid-£50,000 range in 2023 and 2025. Rather than indicating continued decline, the consistency between these results suggests the work has established a more stable trading level within Moving Focus.

The series of results also demonstrates demand across different market segments. In 2023, an Artist’s Proof achieved £65,000, while a later Main Edition example sold in Japan, highlighting international interest in the work. Compared with related works from the same interior setting, Pembroke Studio Interior remains the strongest print representation of the scene. For comparison, Two Pembroke Studio Chairs – a separate work from the same setting – has averaged approximately £15,000, reinforcing the importance of composition and recognisable imagery when assessing value within Moving Focus.

David Hockney Views Of Hotel Well Print Market

The three Views Of Hotel Well compositions represent one of the least established segments within Moving Focus. All recorded auction results have occurred from 2024 onwards, with only four sales across the three works: Well III achieved £52,633 ($75,000) in its first recorded auction appearance in 2024, Well I reached £43,213 ($55,000), while Well II has appeared twice, increasing from £25,056 (€30,000) in 2024 to £41,233 ($55,000) in 2025.

Although the dataset remains limited, it already highlights the importance of placement. Well II's two auction appearances took place in different markets–first in Berlin and later at Link Auction Galleries in the United States. While differences in condition may have contributed to the variation in price, the result also demonstrates how the location of a sale can influence buyer competition and ultimately the value achieved. As additional examples come to market, these works will help establish a clearer pricing framework within the broader Moving Focus series.

Moving Focus Print Market Performance 2022–2026

David Hockney Moving Focus Print Market in 2026

Across the full Moving Focus market, 2025 was the strongest year on record: £1.3 million in total hammer value from 28 sales, ahead of both 2022 (£1 million from 20 sales) and the 2024 low of £886,000 from 21 sales. Average price per lot has not returned to 2022 levels – £46,000 in 2025 against £53,000 in 2022 – but transaction volume has, which points to a market absorbing more supply at a moderated average rather than one that has genuinely cooled.

Recent auction results reinforce the strength of buyer demand. Amaryllis In Vase, Hotel Acatlán: Second Day and Hotel Acatlán: Two Weeks Later have all significantly outperformed their estimates, while the scarcity of works such as Hotel Acatlán: First Day and the Views Of Hotel Well prints has kept competition focused on the limited examples reaching the market. Together, these factors suggest demand is continuing to outpace supply for the strongest works in the series.
