Meaning & Analysis
Blame Game VIII is a signed screen print in colours on Saunders Waterford High White paper made by renowned American artist and designer, KAWS. Produced in 2014, in an edition size of 100, the print shows a close-up of a cartoon character’s face. The character is rendered in bright and bold colours, with a yellow tongue, purple nose, and green mouth. The unconventional colours reflect KAWS’ love of colour and playful experimentation with it. The cartoon character appears to be smiling at something, however KAWS’ addition of his trademark crossed eyes imbue the print with a morbid and sombre air.
Blame Game VIII is one of 10 screen prints that compose the Blame Game collection. Each print in the collection depicts a close-up portion of the same cartoon character, abstracting the cartoon from its body and surroundings. The series captures KAWS’ visual style which was deeply influenced by graffiti and street art. KAWS started experimenting with graffiti as a teenager and immersed himself in the street art scene in New York when he moved there to study illustration at the School of Visual Arts.
KAWS’ artistic origins in graffiti and street art has led the artist to be compared to Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, two leading 20th century artists who emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s. The artist’s love of the screen printing technique and popular culture has also meant KAWS is frequently likened to Andy Warhol, the father of the Pop Art movement.
