Biography

Anastasia Bay is a Belgian Contemporary artist whose work intricately weaves historical art with modern narratives. Born in Paris in 1988, she later relocated to Brussels. After graduating from the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2012, under the guidance of François Boisrond, Bay began developing her signature style, oscillating between abstraction and figuration.

Her artistic practice engages deeply with classical art, mythology, and contemporary culture. Bay’s paintings evoke the expressiveness found in ancient funerary sculptures and Byzantine iconography, fostering a dialogue between the past and the present. This approach has led to the exhibition of Bay's work in key galleries, including the Wouters Gallery in Brussels.

Bay's career is marked by exhibitions and increasing recognition in the Contemporary Art market. Her recent exhibition, The Stumbler’s Parade, held at Venus Over Manhattan in 2023, featured twelve paintings inspired by Pieter Bruegel the Elder's The Blind Leading the Blind. This exhibition represented her debut in New York City, showcasing her ability to reinterpret classical visual narratives through a contemporary lens.

In addition to her exhibitions, Bay has engaged in collaborative projects that merge art, performance, costume design, and music. For her second solo show at the Brussels-based gallery Sorry We’re Closed, Bay created Maestra Lacrymae, an exhibition opera that brings historical characters and referential paintings into the present, reimagining their roles through vivid storytelling. This project saw Bay collaborating with costume designers and artist-musician Joseph Schiano di Lombo, who brought the painted figures to life through sound and narrative.
