Biography

Born in 1924 in Paris, Claude Lalanne developed a passion for art and nature from an early age. She studied architecture and fine arts at the École des Beaux-Arts and École des Arts Décoratifs, where she was inspired by modernist principles. After meeting François-Xavier Lalanne, her future husband and creative partner, they began working together, crafting imaginative and humorous sculptures that juxtaposed the natural with the surreal. Claude's early experiments in electroplating botanical forms set the stage for her signature style, blending intricate craftsmanship with a sense of playfulness.

Throughout their careers, the Lalannes often collaborated, but Claude's personal contributions were unmistakable. Her work was characterised by a delicate balance of form and function, as she often created pieces that served as both artistic statements and utilitarian objects, such as her surrealistic furniture and accessories.

Lalanne's work has been exhibited in major exhibitions across the globe, with her sculptures gracing the gardens of the elite and the galleries of the world’s top art institutions. Her later works continued to reflect a fascination with the natural world, often incorporating elements like ginkgo leaves and apples in precise detail, exemplified in her Pomme Bouche. Even into her later years, Claude Lalanne remained active, participating in exhibitions that celebrated her contribution to contemporary art. Her legacy is one of bridging the gap between fine art and functional design, influencing generations of artists and designers alike.
