Critical Review

Mocad is a signed screen print in colours produced by the internationally acclaimed American artist and designer, KAWS in 2019. The print depicts an isolated portion of a larger composition. The close-up angle means it is impossible for the viewer to discern what they are looking at. Red and purple dominate the composition, and bold black gestural lines are used to outline a curved shape. Seen alongside KAWS’ other works, it is likely that the print is showing a section of a cartoon figure’s face.

This print captures the essence of KAWS’ style, characterised by an emphasis on colour and use of bold gestural lines in a graphic style. The print differs from others by the artist because of its abstract style. KAWS tends to depict cartoon characters in his artworks and has created an impressive cast of stock figures such as Bendy, Chum, Companion and Accomplice, which reappear throughout his works in different settings and iterations.

KAWS’ graphic style can be traced back to his youth and experimentation with graffiti. The artist used to spray paint buildings in New Jersey where he grew up, and continued to hone his skills in New York, when he moved there to study illustration at the New York School of Visual Arts. KAWS’ early career as a freelance animator has also had a profound impact on the artist’s style.
