BANKSY, KIDS ON GUNS, SPRAY PAINT ON CANVAS, 2004
Kids on Guns is one of Banksy's most revered works. It is yet another example of his artworks featuring his iconic girl figure holding a red, heart-shaped balloon known from Balloon Girl. This spray painting depicts two children, the little girl and a boy holding a teddy bear, standing on top of a hill of guns. The simplicity of the colour contrasts gives the image a sense of profound meaning, making it one of the artist's more sombre pieces.
The children are a symbol of childlike innocence and the balloon stands for love and hope, while the dark pile of guns beneath represents violence and suffering caused by war. In this sense this image can be seen as a hopeful piece, suggesting that through embracing such positive values embodied by the two kids, humanity can overcome violent conflict.
